lyrics

IN MY DAY – Hugh Wilson 2008

• In my day there was sunlight, and air and water.
• We lived sustainable lives, focusing on the word custody, not ownership.
• In my day people recognized that value was more than just human agreements exchanging variably rare goods. And that impact and necessity were of greater value than possession and leverage.
• In my day the importance of incentives was recognized. But incentives were for the greater good. For long-term benefits. For the next generation. Incentives were not geared towards instant gratification, accumulation and preventing every possibly negative scenario that may or may not eventuate.
• In my day there was no such thing as race. No clear delineation between one group of people and the next. Race was a thing you ran. Not a tan. In my day people had a dream that one day people would not be judged by each other. Period.
• It won’t happen in my day
• It won’t happen any other way

• In my day what one did was more important than what one said.
• In my day children were allowed to live. They had parents that didn’t kill them when too many bills came in. Or when a parent got a new job. Jobs weren’t as important as kids in my day.
• In my day pregnancy was a consequence not a punishment. Controlling one's life was considered boring, and going with the flow and dealing with consequences was more important than trying to unring a bell and revert to a previously desired life course.
• In my day we knew life began at conception and had clarity that no human should end human life. Period.
• In my day humans were not considered possessions. To be discarded. Or owned.
• It won’t happen in my day
• It won’t happen any other way

• In my day faith and science were inseparably conjoined. Faith helped science and science helped faith. In my day it was recognized that everyone had a worldview and that faith in ones doubts was still faith.
• In my day a person’s politics was like a patchwork quilt rather than a monochrome wall. Left wing on one policy, right wing on the other.
• In my day there was a semblance of democratic process.
• Where people could speak up and vote for a guy they thought was the best person to run the place.
• In my day, swimming in the ocean was the highlight of the day. As was a snowfall.
• In my day, getting up at sunrise and going to bed at sundown was not abnormal.
• In my day we ate parsnips.
