If we were in the same position

from Civilis by Hugh Wilson

lyrics

You got scared
'Cause they're not how you want it
Don't have the face you wanna face the morning with
You don't care
'Bout their humanity
or what they're running from
or whether they deserve to live

We signed a piece of paper
that said that we'd take them in
Some of us have a saviour
who died for their sins
Why do we close a door
we'd want opened for us
if we were in the same position
what would we want them to do for us
is this what we want them to do to us

It gives me rage
when you try to explain
what your doing is to save them from an ocean wave
the hypocrisy in what you tell them to do
when you're so comfortable while they're running from hell
escaping from hell

We signed a piece of paper
that said we'd let them in
Some of them share our saviour
who died for our sins
Why do we lock them up
hide their children away
if we were in the same position
what would we want them to do for us
is this what we want them to do to us

when is it ever right
to hurt wounded man
who comes up to your house
needing a helping hand
why be such a coward
using the sea as a fence
we got so much land I wish we had common sense
when is it ever fine
to hurt a wounded child
who's sailed up to your shores
through the raging wilds
why such hypocrisy
from a people so free
if we were in the same position
what would we want them to do for us
